THE SCARECROW by Michael Connelly

I ordered this book after re-reading THE POET. These novels feature the news reporter, Jack McEvoy. Received Fr 12/1/17 from Amazon and finished it in the tub after a visit to Planet Fitness on Sa 12/31/17.

Jack investigates a 'trunk murder'. A sixteen year old, black gang-banger is accused of killing a white junkie stripper. Jack realizes that there are similarities to other killings.

"A signature crime is a crime which exhibits characteristics idiosyncratic to specific criminals, known as signature aspects, signature behaviors or signature characteristics. Where a modus operandi (MO) concerns the practical components of a crime which can also be unique to one suspect, signature aspects fulfill a psychological need and, unlike the MO, do not often change."

Rachel Walling, FBI agent, and girlfriend of Jack's from THE POET is back in this novel. She is integral to the plot and she's a fantastic agent and profiler.

The title refers to the villain, Wesley Carver. He works for a digital security company and the title means that he is, 'the scarecrow that scares away the data predators'. The company is located in Mesa, AZ.
He is afflicted with a sexual fetish called, 'abasiophilia'-

"An overpowering sexual attraction to people who use orthopedic appliances such as leg-braces, spinal braces, plaster or fiberglass orthopedic casts, or wheelchairs".

I think Michael Connelly is the best writer of contemporary thrillers- there are a few in his league, but none better!
